Beaches offer a perfect escape from daily life, with calming waves, soft sands, and fun activities. However, like any outdoor environment, beaches also come with their share of potential risks—whether it’s a jellyfish sting, dehydration, or a minor injury. As Karachi’s leading beach safety organization, PALS Rescue (Pakistan Life Saving) is here to share essential first aid basics that every beachgoer should know.
These tips are designed to help you handle common beach emergencies safely until professional help arrives. Whether you’re enjoying the scenic French Beach, hosting a picnic at Turtle Beach, or planning a day of adventure at Churna Island, being prepared can make all the difference.
Dealing with Cuts and Scrapes
Cuts from sharp rocks, shells, or even sand can occur during beach adventures.
What to Do:
- Rinse the wound with clean water to remove sand and debris. Avoid using seawater, as it may contain harmful bacteria.
- Apply pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding.
- Use an antiseptic solution (if available) and cover the wound with a sterile bandage.
When to Seek Help:
If the bleeding doesn’t stop after applying pressure for 10 minutes or if the wound is deep, call for lifeguard assistance or medical help.
Treating Jellyfish Stings
Jellyfish stings are painful and can happen unexpectedly while swimming.
What to Do:
- Rinse the affected area with vinegar or saltwater to neutralize the sting. Avoid fresh water as it can worsen the reaction.
- Use a flat object, like a credit card, to scrape away any remaining tentacles.
- Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain.
When to Seek Help:
If the sting causes difficulty breathing, chest pain, or spreads over a large area, alert the lifeguards immediately.
Managing Heat Exhaustion and Dehydration
Long hours under the sun without adequate hydration can lead to heat exhaustion.
What to Do:
- Move the person to a shaded or cooler area immediately.
- Encourage them to sip water slowly. Avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks.
- Cool the body with damp towels or by fanning.
When to Seek Help:
If the person feels dizzy, confused, or shows signs of severe dehydration (no sweating, dark urine, or fainting), seek medical assistance promptly.
Handling Drowning Incidents
Drowning is a critical emergency that requires immediate attention. PALS Rescue lifeguards are trained to handle such incidents, but knowing what to do can help save lives.
What to Do:
- Alert the nearest lifeguard immediately. PALS Rescue lifeguards are present at many Karachi beaches, including Turtle Beach and French Beach Karachi.
- If no lifeguard is nearby and you’re a strong swimmer, throw a flotation device to the victim and guide them toward safety.
- Perform CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing once they are onshore.
Addressing Minor Burns (Including Sunburns)
Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause painful sunburns, while contact with hot sand or a bonfire might lead to minor burns.
What to Do:
- For sunburns, apply aloe vera gel or a cooling lotion to soothe the skin.
- For minor burns, rinse the area with cool (not cold) water and cover it with a clean, dry cloth.
When to Seek Help:
If the burn blisters or covers a large area, consult a medical professional.
First Aid for Marine Life Injuries
Stepping on sea urchins or sharp shells can lead to painful punctures or cuts.
What to Do:
- Rinse the wound with warm water to ease pain and remove any spines carefully.
- Apply antiseptic and cover the wound to prevent infection.
When to Seek Help:
If you notice swelling, redness, or other signs of infection, seek medical advice.
Recognizing and Assisting with Breathing Issues
Saltwater inhalation, asthma attacks, or panic from water accidents can cause difficulty breathing.
What to Do:
- Stay calm and help the person sit upright to ease their breathing.
- If they use an inhaler (for asthma), assist them in using it immediately.
- If the person isn’t breathing, begin CPR and call for help.
When to Seek Help:
Any breathing difficulty is a medical emergency. Alert the lifeguards or call emergency services without delay.
